What Does It Look Like When You Have Wisdom - Quick Observations - Proverbs 2:10-22
Quick links to the passage: KJV NKJV NASB NIV
Just a reminder before we get started for you to sign up for our online bible study. We will be starting in the second week of June and spots are filling up so don’t miss out. It will be a great time of studying and learning to study the bible. I am really getting stoked about it because I can’t wait to see what God will do in our bible study. He never disappoints on delivering the goods when you study His Word. Now to the quick observation.
How many times have you heard people say this: When it comes to doing what God wants, I have it in my head, it just has not reached my heart yet. I must admit I have said it. We wonder if there is a special thing we need to do to get the stuff from our head to our heart. The fact of the matter is that it is an automatic process. What we digest through our eyes and ears will go directly to our inner self and influence us. Just examine when we consume media not honoring to God and how it influences us.
With that said, for some reason, it is longer to have the things of God go from our head to changing our lives than the things of the world. There is an element of the spiritual warfare going on with that. So we must keep influencing our lives with the Word of God and the things of God in order to influence our lives. We must not be passive but proactive in this endeavor.
When we actively apply wisdom to our lives and possess it for ourselves, certain results occur in our life…
First, according to verses 12 to 15, you will be delivered from the way of the evil one. His words are fraudulent and untrustworthy (verse 12). He does things in darkness to hide his actions and the true nature of his intentions. He avoids things of integrity and nobleness (verse 13). He likes it when evil things happen and encourages those who do what he does (verse 14). Even when you think he is your best friend, you can’t trust him (verse 15).
Second, in verses 16 to 19, you will be delivered from the sexually immoral one. I want to share a couple of notes here. First, this issue could have been easily been included in the one just discussed. So it seems that Solomon is focusing on this one issue over everything else. Sexual sin is no greater or less sinful than any other. It violates God’s character like anything else. But sexual sin is so strong and binding that it is one of the most dangerous. If you are involved in sexual sin, seek help now because you cannot recover from it on your own. Second, Solomon is writing to his son so he is talking about the immoral woman. It could easily be discussed as the immoral man if he was talking to his daughter. The sexually immoral are smooth talkers to entice you (verse 16). They have broken their marriage vows they have made and have forsaken their spouses (verse 17). It is almost impossible to recover from sexual sin on your own altogether and you will never get away unscathed (verses 18 and 19).
Third, you will recognize the right way to live. Verse 20 says you will walk the way of goodness and keep the path of righteousness. To be able to recognize the good and right path, especially when things may not seem clear is priceless.
Fourth, you will receive God’s promised blessings in your life. Solomon, being Jewish, believed in the covenant promise God made to Abraham. The promise of a land and a seed and a blessing to Abraham was God’s promised blessings to Israel through Abraham. And when he wrote that the upright will dwell in the land and the blameless will remain in it, Solomon literally meant that. Now that a new covenant has been established under Christ, that promise does not apply to us, but if we possess wisdom in our life that results in upright and blameless living that pleases God, His blessings will be on our lives also.
? if someone anyone for that matter is living with there life partner in a biblical sence this would be considerd im moral so if you go to your local court and tie the not then you dont go to hell to burn right?
Will,
Thanks for the comment. This is a good question especially when the bible speaks against relationships that are not in the model of the traditional marriage. The issue of whether someone will be sent to hell is more widespread than living in sin with a partner. People will be sent to hell because they are sinners, whether they are in an unlawful relationship or not.
The real issue hangs on whether by faith you believe that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, has died for those sins in your place and paid the penalty for your sins for you. If you do, then you will be saved from your sin, including the impending penalty. If not, you are already condemned until you either believe or you die and meet the ultimate judgment and resulting penalty in eternal torment.
The bottom line is don’t be suduced by smooth talking men or women for they will lead you down a path of distruction! Our ears are easy to be tickled and our heads turned if we do not heed the Word of the Lord.
Again the gathering of believers brings strength and resolve to keep on the right track. If we fall we have others to come along side us and pick us up in prayer.
