These verses really have opened my eyes to how my children respond to discipline and correction. Also it has caused me to look back at my childhood at how I had responded to my parents when they disciplined and corrected me and how that attitude has influenced and molded my life now as an adult. I can say I am not too proud of my performance as a child during those circumstances. And I am trying to impress on my children about their attitudes during those times also.

God makes a big deal about this in these verses. Let us see what he says.

Solomon tells us not to despise the chastisement of the Lord. The root of despise literally means to spurn. Do you detest or spurn correction or chastisement in your life, whether by parents, God, or other authority. That is an improper attitude. Instead of thinking of it as a slam or put down, consider it an opportunity of improvement. Neither are we to be weary of being corrected by God. The idea here is that we have grown so tired that we become fed up and sever our fellowship with Him. This all steps from an incorrect attitude. It also stems from an incorrect perception that the one correcting hates the one being corrected. Let us read on to get a reality check on this.

The next says that God loves those He corrects like a father loves his son. Does this make sense to you? Do you have a hard time wrapping your mind around the idea that the one disciplining you is doing it out of love, whether it is a parent, or God, or other authority figure? If so, ask God to show you His love for you, you may be amazed what he shows you.
